Project note, August 2026: This post explains a conditional evidence gate in the SoCalNomad publishing pipeline.
Three independent sources sounds like a responsible publication threshold.
For a major tour announcement, it is easy to satisfy. National outlets, trade publications, label publicity, and entertainment sites all repeat the same announcement.
For a legitimate club show or scene festival, three outlets may never cover it. A rigid source minimum can therefore measure publicity scale rather than confidence.
The Old Gate Was Simple And Unequal
NewsDesk required every publishable cluster to contain three distinct source outlets.
That protected against single-source synthesis and thin rumors. It also meant a locally specific story supported by two credible reports could lose to a generic chart story repeated across five national sites.
The rule applied equally. Its impact was not equal.
Mainstream subjects naturally produce more duplicated coverage. Smaller scenes often produce fewer but more locally relevant sources.
Evidence Has More Than One Dimension
The revised gate retains the three-source path for ordinary stories. It adds a second path for clusters with at least two sources and a strong confirmed Southern California signal.
That local signal must already have survived the priority analysis. It can come from a confirmed date or venue in the article, or a reliable match against the calendar data.
This is not a general reduction from three sources to two. It is a conditional rule:
three or more independent sources
OR
two or more sources plus strong confirmed local relevanceCandidates are then ordered by editorial priority before raw source count.
Fewer Sources Does Not Mean Lower Standards
Source count is only one part of confidence.
Five outlets can reproduce the same press release without adding verification. Two sources can independently identify the same date and venue. Conversely, two vague rewrites with no concrete local detail should not pass merely because the artist fits a preferred genre.
The gate changes distribution, not the obligation to verify claims during synthesis and human review.
A Threshold Is A Publishing Policy
Constants such as MIN_SOURCES look like implementation details. They determine whose stories can exist on the site.
The better question was not “What number sounds safest?” It was “What combinations of evidence justify publication for this publication’s actual coverage area?”
Three remains a useful default. Two becomes sufficient only when the missing publicity volume is replaced by specific, verifiable local value.
